Police: Woman Killed The Day After Her Birthday In Fatal Head-On Collision In East Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg detectives are investigating a fatal head-on collision in east Charlotte that left one woman dead and another woman seriously injured on Saturday.

Officers responded to the crash on Eastway Drive around 5 a.m. to find a 2003 Honda Accord with front-end damage and a 2016 Nissan Versa with heavy front-end damage.

Police say the driver of the Honda, 58-year-old Etta Rhem, sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The driver of the Nissan, 33-year-old Shi-Kerra Pickett, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a news release.

Detectives say Pickett was traveling north on Eastway Drive when she drove out of her lane to the left into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with Rhem in her Honda, which was traveling south.

Police say Rhem was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash, and speed and impairment do not seem to be contributing factors for her.

The victim, Pickett, was not wearing her seatbelt and reckless driving and speeding seem to be contributing factors in the crash, according to a news release.

Detectives say impairment is also suspected on Pickett’s part.

The investigation into the collision is active and ongoing.

Police ask anyone with more information to call Detective Pressley at 704-432-2169, extension 2, or to leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or http://charlottecrimestoppers.com/.
