Detectives Investigate A Fatal Crash In North Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg detectives are investigating a fatal car crash in north Charlotte that left the driver of an Audi dead early Friday morning.

Officers arrived at the scene of the crash on North Tryon Street around 3 a.m. to find a black 2017 Audi A6 lying in the roadway with severe damage.

Police say in the grassy area to the car’s right, officers found the driver of the Audi, later identified as 43-year-old Dameon St. John.

Medics pronounced St. John dead at the scene due to injuries sustained in the collision.

Detectives say initial investigation reveals that St. John lost control of the Audi as he was speeding down North Tryon Street.

Investigators say the Audi went off the road to the right and collided with several metal poles, two utility poles, and a tree.

The Audi also collided with several parked cars that were in a parking lot before coming to a rest, according to a news release.

Police say St. John was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was ejected from the Audi.

Excessive speed is a factor for the crash and impairment is suspected, according to a news release.

The investigation into this collision is active and ongoing.

Police ask anyone who witnessed the crash to call Detective Mercedes at 704-432-2169, extension 5, or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or http://charlottecrimestoppers.com/.
